Folding screen of Donga

item : Folding Screen Designer : Katsumi ASABA Traditional craft : Kawatsura lacquerware / Tsugaru lacquerware

A folding screen featuring the Dongba script of the Naxi people of southwestern China, which has been called the sole “living pictographic writing” left in the world. In this beautiful piece the traditional techniques of Kawatsura lacquerware have been combined with kara-nuri, a Tsugaru lacquerware technique that produces richly expressive irregular patterns with a keynote of vermilion and deep red. Each panel of the piece features detailed and precisely rendered patterns that give a depth that rewards repeated viewing.
