Barred Sharaku

Item : Woodblock print Designer : Katsumi Asaba Traditional Craft : Edo-period woodblock print

With the imposition of an evocative barred motif in black, a lively actor print by the Edo-period artist Toshusai Sharaku is reborn as contemporary reinterpretation of ukiyo-e. Techniques inherited from Sharaku’s time, including a complex process involving 8 separate blocks and 41 inkings and pullings of the print, are used to achieve subtle effects such as blurred lines and color shading.
